Salt generators are devices used in swimming pools to convert regular table salt (sodium chloride) into chlorine, providing a gentler and more automated way to sanitize pool water.
Converting your pool into a salt water pool has never been easier. Saltwater pools create chlorine by converting the salt in the pool water to chlorine through its own electrolysis. The two components that are needed are the control panel and the salt cell. The control panel allows you to regulate the amount of chlorine generated. Different times a year the amount of chlorine generated will vary depending on the sun’s intensity. When the salt water from the pool travels through the cell, the blades in the cell generate chlorine that sanitize the pool water before traveling back into the pool. Its that easy! The benefits are many. No more red eyes, silky feeling skin, hair doesn’t fade, swimsuits don’t fade and the pool maintains a constant level of sanitation. Oh and did we mention no more lugging heavy chlorine containers?
How Salt Generators Work
Saltwater pools still use chlorine—but instead of manually adding liquid chlorine or tablets, the salt generator produces chlorine automatically through a process called electrolysis. The process works like this:
- You add pool-grade salt to the water (typically 2,500–3,500 ppm).
- The water passes through the generator’s electrolytic cell, which applies a low-voltage electrical current.
- The salt molecules are split, producing hypochlorous acid, the same sanitizing agent found in traditional chlorine pools.
- The chlorine sanitizes the water and then reverts back to salt, creating a continuous cycle.
Benefits of Saltwater Chlorinators
-
Softer, gentler water: Feels silkier on skin, hair, and eyes compared to traditional chlorine.
-
Lower chemical handling: Reduces the need to store and handle hazardous chlorine products.
-
More stable chlorine levels: Automation helps avoid big spikes or drops in chlorine concentration.
-
Cost savings over time: While the upfront cost is higher, reduced chemical purchases can save money long-term.
-
Lower maintenance: Many systems are self-regulating, requiring less manual dosing.
