Salt generators are devices used in swimming pools to transform regular table salt (sodium chloride) into chlorine, providing a gentler and more automated way to sanitize pool water.

Switching to a saltwater pool is simpler than ever. Instead of manually adding chlorine, a saltwater system turns the salt already in your pool into chlorine through a process called electrolysis. It works with just two main components: a control panel and a salt cell. The control panel lets you adjust how much chlorine is produced, which can change throughout the year based on sunlight and pool usage. As pool water flows through the salt cell, special blades convert the salt into chlorine, which sanitizes the water before it returns to your pool—automatically and efficiently. The perks? No more stinging eyes, dry skin, or faded swimsuits. You’ll notice your water feels smoother and more comfortable. Best of all, you can say goodbye to hauling around bulky chlorine jugs—your system takes care of it all for you.

How Salt Generators Work

Saltwater pools still use chlorine—but instead of manually adding liquid chlorine or tablets, the salt generator produces chlorine automatically through a process called electrolysis. Here is how electrolysis works:

  1. You add pool-grade salt to the water (typically 2,500–3,500 ppm).
  2. The water passes through the generator’s electrolytic cell, which applies a low-voltage electrical current.
  3. The salt molecules are split, producing hypochlorous acid, the same sanitizing agent found in traditional chlorine pools.
  4. The chlorine sanitizes the water and then reverts back to salt, creating a continuous cycle.

Benefits of Saltwater Chlorinators

  • Softer, gentler water: Feels silkier on skin, hair, and eyes compared to traditional chlorine.

  • Lower chemical handling: Reduces the need to store and handle hazardous chlorine products.

  • More stable chlorine levels: Automation helps avoid big spikes or drops in chlorine concentration.

  • Cost savings over time: While the upfront cost is higher, reduced chemical purchases can save money long-term.

  • Lower maintenance: Many systems are self-regulating, requiring less manual dosing.
