How Salt Generators Work

Saltwater pools still use chlorine—but instead of manually adding liquid chlorine or tablets, the salt generator produces chlorine automatically through a process called electrolysis. Here’s how it works:

1. You add pool-grade salt to the water (typically 2,500–3,500 ppm).
2. The water passes through the generator’s electrolytic cell, which applies a low-voltage electrical current.
3. The salt molecules are split, producing hypochlorous acid, the same sanitizing agent found in traditional chlorine pools.
4. The chlorine sanitizes the water and then reverts back to salt, creating a continuous cycle.
